'Reparations' is the debut album of Australian saxophonist / composer Stephen Byth.
Depicting musical narratives in an Australian context, this album explores themes such as identity, landscape, time and place, as well as the navigation of complex social dynamics.
Showcasing Byth's broad conceptual and compositional scope, this album ranges from sweeping orchestral soundscapes inspired by Béla Bartók, to explosive dynamic peaks reminiscent of Coltrane's later period.
Drawing inspiration from stories of Australia's past and present, 'Reparations' depicts a continuous narrative through the use of expansive orchestrations over through-composed forms, interspersed with inspired improvisations from musicians hailing from various corners of the globe.
At its heart, ‘Reparations’ is a call-to-action for all Australians to do their part in repaying the debt owed to Indigenous Australians and the Natural World, which are inextricably linked, after centuries of mistreatment, damage and oppression.
These Reparations must come in the form of not only financial support, but continued activism centred around truth-telling about Australia’s past and present, as well as advocacy for cultural and legislative change for the benefit of all Australians.
This project is focused on how the issues of systemic racism and environmental degradation have manifested in Australia, yet these are fundamental global issues. This project serves as my contribution towards the global fight against these forces with the hopes of leading to a more truthful and just world as we move forward into the future.
PRESS / REVIEWS
“The gravitas of this music is immediate from the first note. […] While there are no obvious antecedents to this beautiful contemporary jazz, I detect in Byth’s grand themes a nod to the seminal works of great American composer/orchestrators Charles Mingus and Gil Evans. The music here is rich enough to be considered in those terms.”
- Eric Myers, The Weekend Australian
“Throughout, Byth’s music is permeated with a haunting, almost filmic quality, achieving its effect via a gentle and incremental layering of sound. […] With his debut album, Byth has established himself as a compelling new voice in Australian jazz.”
- Des Cowley, Dingo Australian Jazz Journal
