about

‘Welcome, Melancholia’ is a heartfelt homage to three pillars of Black American Music by Australian saxophonist and composer Stephen Byth.

This EP-length project features compositions by John Coltrane, Duke Ellington and Wayne Shorter, all of which have provided endless inspiration to Byth throughout his time as a musician.

Featuring lush wind orchestrations and contemporary production techniques which are quickly becoming his trademark, Byth brings together his regular collaborators in pianist Yessaï Karapetian, bassist James Heazlewood-Dale and drummer Tyson D. Jackson (along with guests Sheila Del Bosque on flute and Nathan Kay on trumpet) to create a work that aims to capture the spirit of the compositions of Coltrane, Ellington and Shorter, while reimagining them through the musical lens of Byth’s modern influences such as Colin Stetson, James Blake and Mid-Air Thief.
